What is lyophilization, and why are research peptides often supplied that way?

Freeze-drying under vacuum, used because many peptides are markedly less stable in solution than in dry form.

Lyophilization — freeze-drying — removes water from a frozen sample under vacuum, leaving a dry, typically powdery or cake-like solid. It is used widely for peptides and other biologics because many of these molecules degrade meaningfully faster in solution than in a dry, stable state; lyophilization is one of the standard ways the research-materials and pharmaceutical industries extend a compound’s usable shelf life prior to use.

A lyophilized vial is generally reconstituted — brought back into solution — immediately before use in a laboratory setting, following whatever protocol applies to that specific study.
